Background :
@EN Gastroparesis is a chronic complication of diabetes which causes delay of gastric emptying and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting ,early satiety and abdominal bloating. So, we measured the gastric emptying time in the diabetic patients and
compared
the improvement of gastric emptying time and gastrointestinal symptoms before and after cisapride administration.
@ES Method:
@EN Gastric emptying times were measured with 99mTc labelled eggs in 50 diabetes patients and 20 normal control subjects. 35 of 50 diabetes who had chronic diabetic complication, had taken cisapride 30㎎ per day for 4 weeks and the improvement of
gastric emptying time and clinical symptoms were compared before and after cisapride administration.
@ES Results :
@EN 1) Mean half gastric emptying time of 50 diabetic patients was significantly delayed compared with normal control (82±25 vs 51±16 min, p<0.05).
2) Mean half gastric emptying time of diabetes with complication was delayed compared with that of diabetes without complication, but with no significance.
3) Mean half gastric emptying time of diabetic patients with retinopathy or neuropathy was significantly delayed compared with those of patients without each complication (88±27 vs 68±20 min, p<0.05: 87±27 vs 60±15 min, p<0.05).
4) Various gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, indigestion, early satiety and the delayed gastric emptying time were improved after cisapride administration in diabetic patients with chronic complications and in diabetic
patents
with delayed half gastir emptying time over 1.56SD of normal control (85±25 vs 65±15 min, p<0.05; 93±29 vs 69±16 min, p<0.05).
@ES Conclusion:
@EN Gastric emptying times in diabetic patients were significantly delayed compared with those of normal control and cisapride was effective in improving deleyed gastric emptying time and gastrointestinal symptoms in diabetic gastroparesis.
